The Woman With the Book
A Friend’s Account of Gladys Aylward’s Life
Before she knew what was happening, a typical, worldly British girl of the early 20th century found herself sitting in a midweek church service. Never again would her life be the same. The Lord not only showed her His mercy but also filled her with compassion for others and soon she sensed a calling to serve Him in China. Gladys Aylward came to be known as The Woman With the Book.
Her travels brought her in contact with Russian officers, Japanese troops, and Chinese soldiers. Life among mule-trains, monks, a Mandarin, orphans, and prisoners was her future now. In service to her great Master, Gladys Aylward suffered and yet abounded, was weak and yet strong, lacked wisdom and yet was led in wonderful ways.
