The story of Jonah can be found in the Book of Jonah, chapters 1-4 in the Old Testament of the Bible
Jonah was a prophet who lived in Old Testament times. A prophet spoke out and told people what God wanted them to know. Jonah was known as the son of Amittai and he came from a place called Gath Hepher.
God gave him a message to take to the people who lived in Nineveh. Nineveh was a big city and the people who lived in it were very bad. God was not pleased with them and wanted Jonah to go and tell the people that He was angry with them.
However, Jonah did not want to do this and so he ran away. He headed for a place called Joppa, which was a port. Many boats sailed from Joppa and Jonah found one that was going to a place called Tarshish. He paid his fare and got on board. He hoped to run away from God and the job which God wanted him to do.
However, no one can run away from God, as Jonah was about to find out!
