Reprinted from 1888, by the popular 19th century children’s author who took the pen name “Pansy” (Isabella Alden was her married name), Joseph’s Shield is among our top five stories that will have the greatest eternal influence upon the hearts, minds, and souls of children. It will not take long before you fall in love with Joseph, especially his humorous approach to avoiding the Bible’s influence upon his life–an influence that is quite unavoidable.
Parents will be greatly satisfied knowing that they possess a tool that can so handily help teach children how to apply the Word of God in ordinary, everyday circumstances. You are about to experience a story that takes children to the next level in their journey with the Lord, their fight against sin and their cultivation of character.
“I recently read this book with my ten year old. We both enjoyed it so much that I purchased two more for gifts for seven year old nephews. The story has lessons that the very young will understand but even an adult will enjoy!” — Carrie, Poulsbo, Washington
“As always, the cover of this Lamplighter is exquisite. More importantly, are the character lessons that the book contains. It is bound to draw anyone who reads it closer to our Father and make them want to imitate the life of our dear Savior.” — Jill Bunch, Park City, Montana

“Probably no writer of stories for young people has been so popular or had so wide an audience as Mrs. G. R. Alden, whose pen-name, “Pansy,” is known wherever English books are read.” —Rev. Francis E. Clark in World Wide Endeavor, 1895
About the Lamplighter Rare Collector’s Series
Lamplighter stories are much more than good and wholesome reading for the family. The inspiring role models found in Lamplighter books show a child that outward compliance alone will not carry a child through the stresses and disappointments soon to be faced in adolescence and adulthood, nor are they a substitute for faith in Christ. As we learn of perseverance, courage, loyalty, humility, these are qualities to emulate and pursue, but as children read in stories of others like them trying their best and falling short, they will powerfully learn their need for the gospel. Though life is often not easy, we can be confident that each disappointment and trial is designed by a loving God for our good.
Lamplighter books are carefully designed to draw children back to the Bible, to ensure that each story reflects the character of God. Often, key Scriptures are referenced so that they may be stored in a child’s heart. Lamplighter volumes are recognizable right away by their beautiful, high-quality bindings. But the other unique feature of a Lamplighter book, in contrast to other publications of the same title, is that the Lamplighter editions have been enhanced with helpful footnotes and woven with threads of Biblical truths that will be etched into an awakened moral conscience. These characteristics are what make our Lamplighter Collection so unique and highly valued.
