Jem Strikes Gold
Goldtown Beginnings Book 1
Welcome to Goldtown, California, in 1859 – a motley collection of canvas tents and pioneer folks all trying to make a living during the gold rush. In a new six-book series by the ever-popular Susan K. Marlow, Goldtown Beginnings looks into the early years of Jem Coulter, hero of the Goldtown Adventures series. Full of characters young readers – especially boys – can relate to, this new series will capture imaginations and teach kids history in a fun, exciting way.
In Jem Strikes Gold, seven-year-old Jem Coulter’s family is trying to make a go of it in Goldtown, with Pa panning for gold and Mama baking pies and washing laundry to make ends meet. Jem and his little sister, Ellie, do everything they can to help out.
But it’s hard to help when Will Sterling, a rich boy with a mean streak, picks on Jem every time he runs errands for Mama. When Will’s antics end up ruining the pies, Jem’s had enough. No pies means no money for the whole family! How can he get Will to stop?
When Strike-It-Rich Sam, Jem’s prospector friend, shows up with a scrawny dog, Jem might have an answer to the bully problem. The brave pup can protect them – if only Jem can convince his parents that another mouth to feed is a good idea . . .
About the Author
“I had heard a lot about Susan K. Marlow and was looking forward to reading books by her when the chance to review the first in the Goldtown Beginnings Series presented itself. I was very excited to read the first two books with our children.
Jem Strikes Gold is set in the 1800s during the Gold Rush and centers are Jem and his family. In the first story, we learn how Jem overcomes the challenge of a bully and gain a new friend – a puppy named Nugget. The story leads itself to wanting to learn more about the time period as well as encouraging perseverance and discussions about what to do if someone is being bullied.
I would recommend Jem Strikes Gold and we look forward to the next ones in the series as both our kids really loved the book.” — Kristen
