Abstract of Systematic Theology (James Petigru Boyce)

$29.95 $24.50

A volume of immense value, now back in print! This is one of the finest works of systematic theology ever produced by a Baptist, in fact, the principal founder of the first Southern Baptist seminary, and the first President of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Boyce’s grasp of the topics of theology is outstanding, he is extremely logical in the layout of the subjects, and remarkably simple — which only demonstrates his skillfulness as a teacher. He is ruthlessly and exhaustively biblical, indicated not only by his brilliant theological insights, but by the scores of biblical references at the end of each point. He wrote to train his students, but the volume was highly praised at its debut for how accessible it is for any layman. It is a rich feast for the soul and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

Throughout his ministry Boyce insisted on the importance of theological education for all ministers. In a preface, he described his Abstract of Systematic Theology as follows: “This volume is published the rather as a practical text book, for the study of the system of doctrine taught in the Word of God, than as a contribution to theological science.”

Abstract of Systematic Theology

A volume of immense value, now back in print! This is one of the finest works of systematic theology ever produced by a Baptist, in fact, the principal founder of the first Southern Baptist seminary, and the first President of the Southern Baptist Convention. Boyce lived from 1827-1888.

Completing this book only the year before his death, Boyce said of it:
“This volume is published rather as a practical text book, for the study of the system of doctrine taught in the Word of God, than as a contribution to theological science.”

About the Author

James Petigru Boyce was educated at Brown University under Francis Wayland, whose evangelical sermons contributed to Boyce’s conversion. He continued studies at Princeton Theological Seminary under Charles Hodge, who led Boyce to appreciate Calvinistic theology. Boyce became a pastor, then a university professor, and finally the founder and first president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he taught theology from 1859 until his death in 1888.
