Prayer

Prayer

It was Thomas Lye who said “I had rather stand against the cannons of the wicked than against the prayers of the righteous.”  For there is no more powerful weapon on earth than the prayers of a righteous man.  “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much”, the Apostle James wrote.  One might argue that there are such an abundance of books about prayer, but that no one really learns how to pray but by … praying.  Well, that is true as far as it goes – no one will learn how to pray who neglects prayer, no matter how many books on it he may read.  Still, to say nothing can be learned about prayer from books is to say that believers in Christ have nothing to teach one another, which is most certainly not true. Yes, we may learn from one another how to pray, and one way in which the Holy Spirit, who teaches us to pray, may do so, is by instructing one another. Many of these enduring works by John Bunyan, Paul Miller, David Mcintyre and others are of unspeakable value.
