Devotionals

What exactly is a devotional book and why are some books described in that way?  Generally, a devotional is a book divided into brief, daily readings, often commencing with a particular verse of Scripture, and often for a full year’s worth of readings.  The intent is to provide something brief enough for a Christian to read in a short slot of time, useful for setting his mind on the Scriptures at the start or end of the day.  For instance, probably the original and most famous devotional is Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening.  The very title tells the reader that it was Spurgeon’s intent to supply the reader with something short and contemplative read at the opening of the day and again at bedtime.  Several other devotionals of value are found here, by Paul Tripp, Matthew Henry, Mrs. Charles Cowman, and others.
